Annual events in Galveston you should not miss
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hey there Galvestonians and happy visitors! Galveston is not just about the beach, the beautiful Victorian homes, or the unique island culture. This gem of the Gulf Coast is also known for its annual events that combine history, culture, food, and fun. There's a season for everything here, and each one is marked with events that celebrate the vibrant spirit of our community. If you're new to the area or planning a visit, mark your calendar for some of these not-to-be-missed annual events.
Let's start the year off with a bang - or rather, a throw of beads and a parade of colorful floats. Yes, I'm talking about Mardi Gras! Galveston. This February festivity is the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, featuring over 20 parades, extravagant galas, and concerts that attract people from all over the country. With our historic Strand district as the backdrop, there's nothing quite like Mardi Gras in Galveston.
As spring gives way to summer, we have the annual Galveston Island Beach Revue in May. This event pays homage to Galveston's past as a trendy resort town in the 1920s. Featuring a Bathing Beauties Contest, live music, vintage vendors, and classic car show, the Beach Revue is a vintage-loving beachgoer's paradise. The event is a perfect blend of nostalgia and fun in the sun.
Summer in Galveston wouldn't be complete without the annual Sandcastle Competition in June. Hosted by the American Institute of Architects, this event sees our beaches transform into a canvas for artists and architects who create mind-blowing sculptures out of sand. It's an amazing sight to behold and a great day out for the whole family. You'll be astounded by the creativity and detail in each piece.
As the weather cools down a bit, we welcome fall with the Greek Festival in October. This is a time to indulge in Greek culture right here in Galveston. Enjoy traditional Greek music and dance performances while feasting on authentic Greek cuisine. From baklava to gyros, your taste buds will be on a journey to the Mediterranean.
Last but not least, we round off the year with Dickens on The Strand in December. This holiday street festival is a tribute to the Victorian era, with costumed vendors, strolling carolers, and horse-drawn carriages. The historic Strand district transforms into the streets of Victorian London, making this event a must for Charles Dickens fans and history lovers alike.
So whether you're a local or a visitor, a history buff, a foodie, an art lover, or just someone looking to have a good time, Galveston has an annual event just for you. Come and soak up the sun, sand, and unique culture that make our island the gem of the Gulf Coast.
