A local’s guide to surviving summer heat in Galveston
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello, Galvestonians and welcome visitors! We all know that Galveston is the perfect blend of coastal charm and historic grandeur, with its stunning Victorian homes, rich maritime history, and a laid-back island vibe. But as summer rolls in, so does the Texas heat. Don’t fret though, as a local, I've got a few insider tips to help you survive - and even enjoy - the summer heat in Galveston.
First things first, the beach is our summer sanctuary. With 32 miles of sun-soaked shoreline, there's plenty of space to spread out your beach towel, build sandcastles, or take a refreshing dip in the Gulf. Our beaches are also home to a number of waterfront restaurants and bars, where you can cool off with a frosty margarita or a local craft beer. Just remember to pack plenty of sunscreen and stay hydrated!
Now, if you're looking to escape the sun for a few hours, why not delve into Galveston's rich history? Our city boasts a number of fascinating museums and historic homes, all beautifully preserved and air-conditioned! The Bryan Museum and the 1892 Bishop's Palace are a few of my favorites. Each tells a unique story of Galveston's past and offers a respite from the summer sizzle.
Of course, one of the best ways to beat the heat in Galveston is with our fantastic local cuisine. From fresh-caught seafood to authentic Mexican street food, you'll find plenty of delicious ways to cool down. Be sure to try a scoop (or two!) of homemade ice cream from La King’s Confectionery on The Strand. It's a Galveston tradition!
Another great way to stay cool is to take advantage of our vibrant nightlife. As the sun sets, the temperature drops, and Galveston comes alive with live music, dancing, and outdoor dining. Whether it's a romantic stroll along the seawall or dancing the night away at one of our local music venues, there's always something happening when the sun goes down.
Lastly, don't forget about our island's unique events. Even in the summer heat, Galveston knows how to throw a party. From Mardi Gras celebrations to local farmers' markets, there's always a cool event to enjoy. And, if you're here in August, you won't want to miss our annual Sandcastle Competition. It's a true testament to Galveston's creative spirit and beach-loving culture.
So there you have it, folks! A local’s guide to surviving summer heat in Galveston. Remember, it’s all about embracing the island lifestyle, soaking up our rich history and culture, and of course, enjoying plenty of beach time. Stay cool, y'all, and see you on the island!
