A local’s guide to surviving summer heat in Galveston
By Melanie Nonmacher
Howdy, Galvestonians! As we all know, summertime on our beloved island can be as hot as a jalapeño in the sun, but don't let that scare you off. There's plenty of ways to keep cool and enjoy our slice of Gulf Coast paradise, even in the sizzling heat. As a lifelong Galvestonian, I've got a few insider tips to help you navigate our tropical climate and keep your cool while soaking up the best of island life.
First things first, make the most of those Gulf breezes. There's nothing quite like a refreshing sea wind to take the edge off the heat. Whether you're strolling along the Seawall, exploring the historic charm of our Strand District, or simply enjoying a drink on your front porch, you can often find relief just by positioning yourself to catch those cool coastal gusts. Of course, if the wind's not blowing, you can always create your own breeze with a good, old-fashioned handheld fan - it's a Southern tradition!
Next up, hydration. We're lucky to be surrounded by some of the state's best seafood joints and bars, many of which offer unique, refreshing beverages to help beat the heat. From tropical smoothies at The Spot, to the ice-cold beers at Brews Brothers, to the thirst-quenching margaritas at Taquilo's, there's no shortage of tasty ways to stay hydrated. And don't forget about our local breweries like Galveston Island Brewing - their Tiki Wheat is a summer favorite.
Don't forget about the power of shade. Our island is home to some beautiful, historic homes with large, welcoming porches and tree-lined streets. Take a break from the sun and enjoy the architectural details of these homes while cooling off under their shade. The East End Historic District is a great place to start. If you're beach-bound, pack a sturdy umbrella or a pop-up tent to provide a sun-free sanctuary.
Finally, when all else fails, take a dip. Of course, there's our beautiful Gulf waters, but don't forget about our local pools. The Galveston Island Beach Revue at the historic Hotel Galvez has a gorgeous pool and is a must-visit. If you're looking for a more natural experience, check out the Galveston Island State Park where you can paddle in the bay or swim in the ocean.
Remember, surviving the summer heat in Galveston is all about embracing our island lifestyle. Take it slow, stay hydrated, find some shade and when in doubt, just hit the beach. It's another beautiful day in Galveston, so get out there and enjoy it - just don't forget your sunscreen!
