Annual events in Galveston you should not miss
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello, fellow Galvestonians and friends who have made our island their second home. Galveston, our beloved slice of paradise, is not just about the enchanting beaches and the mesmerizing sunsets. It’s also about the vibrant community that knows how to celebrate life in grand style. And when it comes to celebrating, we have some annual events that you simply cannot miss. So, allow me to take you on a journey through our calendar and highlight these unforgettable occasions.
Let's start with the Mardi Gras. Every year in February, our island transforms into a vibrant display of colors, music, and excitement. This is the largest Mardi Gras celebration in Texas and it truly fills our streets with a contagious energy. Expect beautifully adorned floats, colorful beads flying through the air, and the rhythm of jazz and zydeco music that will get your feet tapping. Come dressed in your most festive attire and let's celebrate the spirit of Galveston together.
As the weather warms up and the azaleas begin to bloom, we turn our attention to the Galveston Island Beach Revue in May. This nostalgic event pays tribute to our island's past as a popular tourist destination in the early 20th century. It's a delightful mix of vintage swimwear, classic cars, and old-fashioned family fun. It's a charming way to welcome the summer season while honoring our rich history.
At the peak of summer, in July, it's time for the Galveston Island Shrimp Festival. This is a treat for all you food lovers out there. The aroma of freshly cooked shrimp fills the air as local chefs compete to create the most delicious shrimp gumbo. But it's not just about the food. The festival also features a 5K run, a children's area, and live music. It's a true celebration of our island's love for seafood and our vibrant community.
Moving into the fall, you won't want to miss the Dickens on the Strand festival in December. This is one of our most cherished traditions. Our historic downtown is transformed into Victorian-era London, with costumed carolers, horse-drawn carriages, and vendors selling traditional holiday treats. It's a magical way to embrace the spirit of the holiday season and it captures the charm and history of Galveston in such a unique way.
As you can see, there is always something to look forward to in Galveston. Our community knows how to celebrate life, history, and culture in the most vibrant ways. Whether you’ve been a part of these events before, or you’re thinking about joining in for the first time, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. So, mark these events on your calendar and let’s celebrate Galveston together.
