Beach safety tips every Galveston visitor should know

By Melanie Nonmacher

Howdy, Galveston Beachy readers! With our sandy shores, Gulf breezes, and the sound of breaking waves, it's no wonder we're all drawn to the beach here in Galveston. The beach is an amazing place to unwind and soak up some sun, but it's also a place where we need to practice caution and respect for Mother Nature. Whether you're a local or a visitor, it's important to know a few safety tips to ensure your beach day is filled with nothing but fun and relaxation.

First and foremost, always swim near a lifeguard. Our Galveston Island Beach Patrol does an amazing job keeping an eye out for our safety. They're well trained to spot potential hazards and respond to emergencies quickly. Even the most experienced swimmers can encounter unexpected situations, so it's always safest to swim where lifeguards can see you. Remember, their main job is to ensure everyone can enjoy the beach safely, so let's make their job easier by following this simple tip.

Next, let's talk about our beautiful Gulf waters. We all know how inviting they can be, especially during our sizzling Texas summers. But be aware of rip currents, which are powerful, fast-moving channels of water that can pull even the strongest swimmers out to sea. If you find yourself caught in one, don't try to swim against it. Instead, swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the current, then swim back to the beach. Knowledge and awareness of rip currents can prevent a relaxing day at the beach from turning into a dangerous situation.

Of course, we cannot forget about sun protection. The Texas sun can be relentless, y'all. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply it every two hours or immediately after swimming. Don't forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses too. These are simple steps to protect your skin and eyes from long-term damage, and they can also save you from a painful sunburn that could ruin your beach day.

Finally, let's remember to keep our beloved beach clean. Galveston is not just our home, it's also home to a diverse array of wildlife. Let's do our part to protect our environment by picking up our trash, using reusable items whenever possible, and leaving only footprints behind. This ensures that our beach remains a beautiful and safe place for everyone to enjoy.

From the historic Strand district to our beautiful beaches, Galveston is a treasure trove of Southern charm and seaside beauty. Whether you're a local who's been here for generations or a visitor experiencing our island culture for the first time, the beach is an integral part of the Galveston experience. Let's keep it safe and enjoyable for all by remembering these beach safety tips. Happy beaching, y'all!
