A local’s guide to surviving summer heat in Galveston
By Melanie Nonmacher
Greetings, Galveston islanders and beach lovers! As the summer heat rolls in, I thought it would be a great time to share some local advice on surviving the season in our beloved Gulf Coast paradise. The Galveston way of life is unique and charming, and knowing how to navigate the summer heat is practically a rite of passage for locals and frequent visitors. So, let’s dive right in.
First off, hydration is key. Our Galveston sun is no joke and it’s easy to get dehydrated while enjoying a day at the beach, exploring our historic homes, or participating in our vibrant island culture. Stock up on water and sip it throughout the day, not just when you're parched. And remember, while our local brews and cocktails are tempting, they can contribute to dehydration, so balance them out with plenty of H2O.
Seeking out shade is another must. Our beautiful palm and oak trees provide perfect canopies for a midday picnic or a lazy afternoon reading session. If you're heading to the beach, invest in a sturdy umbrella or canopy. In between dips in the Gulf, it's a good idea to retreat under your shady refuge. Plus, it provides a great spot for keeping an eye on the kids as they build their sandcastles.
Let’s not forget about the importance of timing. The summer sun in Galveston is most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. so plan your outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon. This is a great time to explore our unique historic district, take a leisurely stroll along the Seawall, or enjoy a sunset dinner at one of our local dining gems.
Finally, take advantage of our local summer events. Mardi Gras may be our most famous, but there’s so much more happening. Many of our events take place in the cooler evenings and are a great way to enjoy the community while staying out of the sun. Check out local listings for free concerts, art walks, and food festivals. And don’t forget our historic Moody Gardens, where you can explore the rainforest pyramid or cool down in the Aquarium pyramid.
Remember, the summer heat is just a part of life here in Galveston, but it doesn’t have to stop us from enjoying our island paradise. With a little bit of planning and a lot of water, you can beat the heat and make the most out of your Galveston summer. Stay cool, beachy friends!
