A local’s guide to surviving summer heat in Galveston
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello there fellow islanders and welcome visitors! Summer is here and with it comes the famous Texas heat, but fear not, as a born and bred Galvestonian, I'm here to share with you some tips to keep your cool. These are no ordinary tips, they reflect our unique island culture, highlighting the best of what Galveston has to offer, while helping you beat the heat. So grab a glass of sweet tea, kick off your flip flops, and let's dive in — Galveston style!
First things first, let's hit the beach. Our beautiful Galveston beaches are the perfect spot to cool down, whether you're a local or a visitor. Pack your cooler with ice-cold drinks and snacks and bring along an umbrella or a tent for shade. The best time to hit the beach is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun isn't at its peak. Don't forget to lather on some sunscreen to protect your skin. And remember, nothing says Galveston like a game of beach volleyball or a leisurely walk along the shore, collecting seashells.
One of the best things about Galveston is our rich history and architecture. Why not escape the midday heat by visiting some of our beautiful historic homes? Places like the Bishop's Palace and the Moody Mansion not only offer a trip back in time, but they also provide a respite from the summer sun with their cool, air-conditioned interiors. These grand old homes are a testament to Galveston's past and a delight to explore.
We all know that nothing beats the heat like a delicious ice cream cone, and Galveston has some of the best ice cream shops in Texas. My personal favorite is La King's Confectionery on The Strand. This old-fashioned ice cream parlor and candy store takes you back to simpler times. Their homemade ice cream, coupled with the shop’s nostalgic charm, makes it a must-visit. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you.
If you're looking for something a bit more adventurous to cool down, why not try some water sports? Galveston is known for its excellent water activities, including kayaking, paddle boarding, and jet skiing. These activities are not only a great way to escape the heat, but they also allow you to see Galveston from a new perspective. There are several rental shops around the island that offer these services, making it easy for everyone to enjoy.
As the sun begins to set and the heat of the day begins to fade, there's no better place to be than sitting on a patio at one of Galveston's many local dining spots. From fresh seafood to mouthwatering BBQ, our island cuisine is a food lover's paradise. So why not end your day with a delicious meal, a cool drink, and a beautiful Galveston sunset?
Surviving summer heat in Galveston is all about embracing the island lifestyle. It's about early morning beach trips, exploring historic homes, indulging in local cuisine, and cooling down with a dip in the Gulf or a scoop of homemade ice cream. So lather on that sunscreen, sip on a glass of sweet tea, and join us in celebrating summer in Galveston. Stay cool, friends!
