Annual events in Galveston you should not miss

By Melanie Nonmacher

Welcome, friends, to our beloved island city, Galveston. This charming coastal gem is not just about sun-kissed beaches and historic homes; it also boasts a calendar packed with exciting annual events. We're talking about festivities that are so deeply ingrained in our island culture that they've become part of our identity. So, whether you're a long-time local or a first-time visitor, here are some annual events in Galveston you simply should not miss.

Our first stop is the Mardi Gras Galveston, the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States. Held annually in February, this 12-day extravaganza features parades, balcony parties, masked balls, and live concerts. It's a burst of colors and rhythms, where the rich tapestry of New Orleans culture intertwines with Galveston's unique island charm. The Mardi Gras is a vibrant testament to our city's resilience, as, despite the adversities we've faced, we know how to throw a party!

When spring arrives, so does the FeatherFest Birding and Nature Photography Festival. Held in April, this is one of the largest birding festivals in Texas. Enthusiasts from all over the country flock to Galveston to participate in birding tours, photography workshops, and to witness the spectacular migration of thousands of birds. It's a perfect opportunity to appreciate the breathtaking natural beauty of our island.

As the warm summer months roll in, we gear up for the Annual Galveston Island Beach Revue. This event is a nostalgic nod to Galveston's past, featuring vintage-inspired events like the Bathing Beauties Contest, classic car show, and live music. The Beach Revue is a fantastic way for us to celebrate our rich history and remind ourselves of the glamour and fun of the island's past.

The Galveston Island Shrimp Festival in September is another event that locals and visitors alike look forward to. This two-day celebration pays homage to the region's shrimp industry. The festival offers a Shrimp Gumbo Cook-Off, a 5k run, a parade, and live music. It's a delicious way to celebrate our local dining scene and savor some of the freshest shrimp in Texas.

Lastly, as the year comes to a close, we cannot forget Dickens on The Strand. This annual Christmas festival transports us back to the Victorian Era, with its streets lined with Dickens-inspired characters, parades, carolers, and delicious food and drink. It's a magical way to wrap up the year and get in the holiday spirit.

Galveston is a city that knows how to celebrate. Each of these events is a reflection of our vibrant community, rich history, and the diverse culture we cherish so much. So, whether you're planning your first trip to Galveston or you're a seasoned local, make sure you mark your calendar for these annual events. They truly capture the essence of our island life and offer unforgettable experiences.
