Beach etiquette and rules every visitor should know
By Melanie Nonmacher
Howdy, Galveston lovers! One of the best things about our beloved island is that it’s a place where everyone is welcome. From the sandy beaches to the historic homes, there’s something for everyone here. And speaking of those sandy beaches, we thought we’d take a moment to chat a bit about beach etiquette. Yup, even on the laid-back coast of Texas, there are a few rules to help everyone enjoy their time on the beach.
First things first, let’s talk about leaving no trace. Galveston’s beaches are a treasure and it’s up to us to keep them that way. That means carrying out what you carry in. Pack a trash bag for your picnic leftovers, empty soda cans, and other waste. And if you see trash left by others, why not do a good turn and pick it up? Let's keep our beaches clean and inviting for everyone.
Now, onto those beach tents and umbrellas. We all love a good shady spot on a hot day, but it’s important to be mindful of others. Don’t block the view of the water for folks behind you and remember to take down your umbrellas and tents at the end of the day. Nothing ruins a beautiful sunrise like a forgotten beach umbrella.
Up next, let’s talk about our furry friends. Dogs are welcome on Galveston’s beaches, but they must be on a leash at all times. And, just like with humans, all doggie doo-doo needs to be picked up and properly disposed of. We all love our pups, but nobody wants to step in a surprise left behind in the sand.
Lastly, we can’t forget about the water. Swimming is a favorite pastime here in Galveston, but it’s important to be mindful of others. Don’t dive or jump near others, and always keep an eye on your little ones. The ocean is a magnificent and powerful force, and it’s up to us to ensure everyone can enjoy it safely.
There you have it, folks! A few simple rules to ensure everyone can enjoy Galveston’s beautiful beaches. Remember, we’re all here to soak up the sun, enjoy the water, and make memories. So, let’s all do our part to keep Galveston the wonderful, welcoming, and beachy paradise we all know and love.
