Beach safety tips every Galveston visitor should know
By Melanie Nonmacher
Howdy, friends! Welcome to Galveston Island, the crown jewel of the Texas Gulf Coast. Our beautiful beaches, rich history, and vibrant culture draw visitors from all over, and we're always happy to share the island life with you. But while you're out there soaking up the sun, it's important to remember that safety should always come first. We want you to enjoy every moment of your beach time, so here are some beach safety tips every Galveston visitor should know.
First things first, keep an eye on the flags. As you stroll our sandy beaches, you'll notice flag poles. They're not just there for decoration, they provide critical information. Green means go, while red flags warn of high surf and dangerous currents. Double red flags? That means the water's closed, partner. Purple flags warn of marine pests, like jellyfish. So before you dive in, take a moment to check the flags.
Speaking of diving in, it's generally a good rule of thumb to avoid it. The depth of the water can change suddenly, and diving into shallow water can lead to serious injuries. Instead, wade into the water. It might not be as dramatic as a high dive, but trust me, it's a lot safer. And while you're in the water, remember to always swim parallel to the shore. That way, if you get caught in a current, you can swim with it until you're free.
Now let's talk sun. We get plenty of it here in Galveston, and while it's great for getting that beachy glow, it's also incredibly important to protect your skin. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and remember to reapply every two hours, and after swimming. And don't forget your eyes - a good pair of sunglasses can protect them from harmful UV rays.
Last but not least, hydration is key. With all the excitement of beach volleyball, sandcastle building, and frolicking in the surf, it's easy to forget to drink water. But dehydration can sneak up on you, and it's no fun at all. So make sure to bring plenty of water and take regular hydration breaks. And remember, if you're enjoying a few adult beverages, alcohol can dehydrate you, too, so balance it out with plenty of H2O.
There you have it, folks. A few simple safety tips can make your day at the beach a whole lot safer and a lot more fun. So whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned islander, let's make every beach day a great day. After all, that's what life in Galveston is all about. Stay safe out there, y'all!
