Annual events in Galveston you should not miss
By Melanie Nonmacher
There's something magical about the coastal charm of Galveston. From its sandy beaches and historic homes to its vibrant culture and delicious cuisine, Galveston is a place that captures the heart. One thing that makes Galveston so special is its annual events. These community gatherings embody the spirit of the island, bringing people together in celebration of our storied traditions and unique culture. As a local, I wouldn’t miss these events for the world, and I highly recommend that visitors make a point to experience them too.
Let's start with Mardi Gras! Galveston. Occurring in late January to early February, this lively festival is one of the largest Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States. A beloved tradition for over a century, Mardi Gras! Galveston encompasses more than 20 parades, elaborate gala events, and countless parties. The festival is a vibrant tapestry of color, music, and excitement that truly embodies the spirit of our island.
In April, Galveston welcomes the annual FeatherFest. It's one of the largest birding festivals in Texas, attracting bird and nature enthusiasts from all over the country. Galveston's unique geographic location results in a spectacular diversity of bird species, making it a birdwatcher's paradise. FeatherFest includes guided birding trips, workshops, and a photo contest, offering plenty of opportunities for novice and experienced birders alike.
When the heat of the summer arrives, so does the annual Galveston Island Beach Revue. This event is a nod to the island's past, harking back to the Bathing Beauties Contest that began in the 1920s. Today, the Beach Revue includes a vintage-inspired bathing beauties contest, classic car show, live music, and plenty of family-friendly activities. It's a fun-filled weekend that celebrates Galveston's rich history and beach culture.
As Fall paints the island in hues of orange and brown, Galveston celebrates ARToberFEST. This fine arts festival showcases works from over 100 artists across the country. The event takes place in the heart of Galveston’s historic downtown, offering a wonderful opportunity to admire art while also exploring the beautifully preserved architecture of our city. There are also live demonstrations, music, food vendors, and activities for kids, making ARToberFEST a perfect event for the whole family.
Last but not least, December brings Dickens on The Strand, a holiday festival where downtown Galveston is transformed into Victorian London. Attendees can enjoy parades, entertainment on six stages, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, and vendors peddling their wares from street stalls. The festival is a beautiful experience that brings the charm and ambiance of Victorian-era Christmas to life.
Each of these events has its own unique flavor, but they all share a common thread: the spirit of Galveston. They provide an opportunity to embrace the city's history, culture, and community, and they bring locals and visitors together in a shared celebration of what makes our island so special. Whether you're a lifelong local or a first-time visitor, I hope you'll join us in celebrating these wonderful annual events in Galveston.
