Family friendly activities in Galveston year round

By Melanie Nonmacher

Ah, Galveston! I often tell folks, if you're not in love with this island town, you just haven't been here long enough. It's not just a summer destination, but a year-round paradise packed with fun activities for the whole family. I've lived here for years and I'm always discovering something new to love about our little coastal gem. So pack your bags and bring the kiddos because Galveston is ready to welcome you with open arms, whatever the season.

Let's start with the beach, the heart and soul of Galveston. While it's a hub of activity during the summer, don't forget about the off-peak months. The winter waves have a beauty all their own and the cooler weather is perfect for beachcombing and shell hunting. The kids will love finding treasures washed up by the sea, and you might even stumble across a rare sea bean or two. The Seawall is also a great spot for a family bike ride or a casual stroll.

When you're done exploring the beach, head on over to some of the amazing museums and historic homes we have in town. The Bryan Museum houses one of the world's largest collections of historical artifacts and documents related to Texas and the American West. It's a fantastic journey through history that is engaging for both kids and adults. The Galveston Railroad Museum and the many beautiful Victorian-era homes, like the Bishop's Palace, are also worth a visit.

If you've got some little animal lovers in your family, the Galveston Island State Park and the Moody Gardens are must-visit spots. The State Park is a great place to spot local wildlife and birdwatch. At Moody Gardens, you'll find an aquarium pyramid, rainforest pyramid, and even a discovery museum. It's an educational and fun adventure for all ages.

Foodies, fret not! Galveston is brimming with local eateries offering everything from fresh seafood to mouth-watering Tex-Mex. The Spot on the Seawall is a family-friendly choice with a diverse menu that has something for everyone. Don't forget to visit La King's Confectionery on the Strand for some old-fashioned candy and ice cream. Trust me, the kids will love watching the taffy puller in action!

And let's not forget about the unique events that Galveston hosts year-round. The Mardi Gras celebration here is one of the largest in Texas, filled with parades, concerts, and balls. But there's also Dickens on the Strand in December, a festival that transforms downtown Galveston into a Victorian London wonderland. There's always something happening on the island, making it the perfect destination for a family getaway at any time of the year.

So, whether you're a local rediscovering your town, or a visitor exploring Galveston for the first time, there's no shortage of family-friendly activities here. From our beautiful beaches to our rich history, unique dining experiences, and lively community events, Galveston has something to offer for everyone. Come join us and fall in love with our little island paradise, one adventure at a time.
