Things to do in Galveston on a rainy day
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello, fellow islanders and welcome visitors! Those of us lucky enough to call Galveston home know that our beloved island is bountiful in its offerings, even when the weather doesn't quite cooperate. And let's face it, we do have those occasional rainy days. But fret not! Galveston's charm and allure don't wash away with the rain. In fact, it's during these times that we get to experience another side of our beautiful island. So, grab your raincoat and let's dive into some delightful rainy day activities in Galveston.
First things first, let’s talk about history. Galveston is steeped in it, and what better way to spend a rainy day than immersing yourself in the island's rich past? The Bryan Museum houses one of the world’s largest collections of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork relating to Texas and the American West. As soon as you step through the doors of this beautifully restored orphanage dating back to the 1890s, you're transported back in time, making it an ideal escape from the rain.
While we're on the topic of museums, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum and Education Center is a must-see. Here, you'll get an up-close look at the offshore oil and gas industry. It's housed in a retired jack-up drilling rig, offering a unique perspective that both locals and visitors will find fascinating. It's a perfectly educational and entertaining way to stay dry!
If you're more of a fan of the arts, Galveston has you covered too! The Grand 1894 Opera House offers a variety of performances throughout the year, ranging from musicals and concerts to stand-up comedy and dance. This historic venue is a true testament to Galveston's architectural grandeur and cultural richness.
And let’s not forget about our delicious local dining scene. Rainy days are a great excuse to linger a bit longer over a meal at one of our many fantastic restaurants. From fresh seafood at Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant to mouth-watering BBQ at Leon’s World Finest BBQ, there’s no shortage of comfort food to warm you up from the inside out. Don't forget to indulge in some delicious dessert at La King's Confectionery afterwards. Their old-fashioned sweets are sure to brighten up any gloomy day.
Of course, if you're visiting or even if you're a local wanting a staycation, there are plenty of unique places to stay that offer comforting havens from the rainy weather. The historic Hotel Galvez with its beautiful spa, or the charming Bed and Breakfasts like Coppersmith Inn with their cozy fireplaces, provide the perfect setting for a cozy rainy day indoors.
In Galveston, we don't let a little rain dampen our spirits. Our island is full of history, culture, and great food, all of which can be enjoyed, rain or shine. So next time those clouds roll in, don't despair. Instead, seize the opportunity to explore a different side of Galveston. Because here, every day is a great day to be on island time.
