Best locally owned restaurants to try in Galveston
By Melanie Nonmacher
When it comes to dining in our beloved Galveston, the island is a treasure trove of distinct flavors and unique experiences. As locals, we know that some of the best gastronomic delights are tucked away in our locally owned restaurants. These culinary gems have been serving up delectable dishes, infused with our island's rich history and culture, for years, and it's about time we shared these favorites with you.
First on the list is the Mosquito Cafe, located in the charming East End Historic District. This vibrant, colorful spot provides guests with a warm, laid-back atmosphere that embodies the spirit of Galveston. Their menu features a variety of fresh, homemade meals, including their famous Shrimp BLT and the mouth-watering Mosquito Benedict. Trust us, this is a dining experience you do not want to miss.
Next, we can't talk about Galveston dining without mentioning Shrimp 'N Stuff. From its humble beginnings as a take-out seafood spot in 1976, it has evolved into a beloved local institution. Serving up some of the best fried shrimp and oyster po-boys on the island, Shrimp 'N Stuff is a testament to Galveston's rich seafood tradition. Their laid-back atmosphere and affordable prices make it a perfect spot for families.
If you're looking for something a little more upscale, Number 13 Prime Steak and Seafood is a must-try. Located in the Pelican Rest Marina, this restaurant offers a dining experience that is truly elevated, both in the literal sense, with its impressive views of the marina and Offats Bayou, and in the culinary sense. Their menu features prime steaks, fresh seafood, and a wine list that is nothing short of spectacular.
For a taste of island history, you must visit Gaido's Seafood Restaurant. A Galveston staple for over 100 years, Gaido's is more than just a restaurant, it's a tradition. With its impeccable service, amazing gulf views, and of course, its legendary seafood dishes, Gaido's offers an experience that is truly Galvestonian.
Finally, for a truly unique dining experience, make sure you visit Farley Girls Cafe. This quirky spot is known for their eclectic menu that ranges from hearty breakfast items to gourmet pizzas, and everything in between. Owned by two sisters, the cafe exudes a welcoming, family-friendly vibe that will make you feel right at home.
In Galveston, we're lucky to have a variety of locally owned restaurants that serve up delicious food with a side of island charm. These are just a few of our favorites, and we're sure you'll find your own as you explore our beautiful island. Bon appétit, y'all!
