Beach safety tips every Galveston visitor should know

By Melanie Nonmacher

Hello, sun-soaked friends! As a long-time resident of our beloved Galveston, I want to share some beach safety tips with you. Whether you're visiting our historic island for the first time or a seasoned local, these tips will help ensure a fun-filled day on our beautiful shores. Remember, the beach is a place of joy, relaxation, and fun, but it can also be unpredictable, so it’s essential to take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones.

First and foremost, be sure to keep a close eye on our ever-changing Gulf waters. Even the most experienced swimmers should be cautious, especially when there are strong currents or rip tides. Always swim near a lifeguard and pay attention to the flag warnings. The flags are there for a reason, and they can be the difference between a beautiful day at the beach and an emergency situation. Take the time to learn what each flag color means, and respect their warnings.

Now, let’s talk about the sun. We love it, we need it, but it can be harmful if not respected. Please, always wear sunscreen. Our Galveston sun is beautiful but strong, and sunburn can ruin any beach trip. Choose a water-resistant sunscreen with at least an SPF 30 rating and remember to reapply it every two hours or after you’ve been swimming or sweating.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! The salty air, the sun, and the sea can dehydrate you faster than you realize. Always bring plenty of fresh drinking water to the beach. Avoid alcohol and any heavy meals before swimming. Both can affect your body's ability to swim and respond to hazards quickly.

Let's not forget about our beach's natural inhabitants. Jellyfish and stingrays can be a concern. It's important to shuffle your feet when entering the water to alert stingrays to your presence. If you're unfortunate enough to get stung by a jellyfish, vinegar is a good first treatment. Always seek medical attention afterward.

Lastly, our beautiful Galveston beaches are home to many types of wildlife. Please respect them and their habitats. Don’t feed the seagulls or other animals and remember to pick up your trash. Our beaches are a shared space, and we all have a responsibility to keep them clean and safe for everyone.

With these safety tips in mind, we hope you enjoy your time on our beautiful Galveston beaches. Whether you're soaking up the sun, exploring our historic homes, or enjoying our unique local dining options, remember to stay safe and respect our island's natural beauty. After all, Galveston isn't just a place; it's a state of mind.
