A brief history of the Galveston Hurricane of 1900
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello, Galvestonians and lovers of our charming island city! Today, we're taking a step back in time to visit one of the most defining moments of our city's history: the infamous Galveston Hurricane of 1900. This catastrophic event not only altered the physical landscape of our city but also shaped the resilient spirit that defines Galveston today.
On a fateful day in early September 1900, a Category 4 hurricane made landfall on our beloved island. Before weather forecasting advancements, the islanders had little warning of the storm's severity. The hurricane brought with it a storm surge that reached over 15 feet and winds of up to 140 miles per hour, a force that the city was ill-prepared to handle. The result was one of the deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history, drawing the lives of an estimated 6,000 to 12,000 people.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the resilient spirit of Galveston's people came to the fore. Rather than abandon their home, the survivors decided to rebuild and fortify the city to withstand future hurricanes. A monumental task lay ahead, but the Galvestonians were undeterred. Over the next decade, they raised the entire city, in some places by as much as 17 feet, making it a testament to their unwavering resolve.
Perhaps the most awe-inspiring feat of this reconstruction was the creation of the Galveston Seawall. This 17-foot-high, 10-mile-long barrier was constructed to protect the city from future storm surges. Today, it not only serves as a protective barrier but also as a popular promenade for locals and visitors alike, symbolic of our city's resilience.
As we stroll down the Seawall, dine in our local eateries, or explore our historic homes, we carry the memory of the 1900 Hurricane with us. It's part of our collective consciousness, reminding us of our resilience and tenacity. It's etched into the architectural details of our grand old buildings and embedded in our vibrant island culture.
So next time you're enjoying the sunset on our beautiful beaches or exploring our historic downtown, take a moment to appreciate the history that shaped our city. The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 is a testament to our ability to rise above adversity, to rebuild, and to thrive. As proud Galvestonians, we carry that spirit with us every day. It's what makes Galveston more than just a place to visit; it's a place to belong.
