A local’s guide to surviving summer heat in Galveston
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello Galveston Beachy friends and followers! Here we go again, another beautiful summer season is upon us in our beloved Galveston Island. While the stunning sunsets, the soft whisper of the waves, and the salty breeze make our summers unforgettable, we also know that the heat can be unforgiving. But worry not, as a seasoned local, I'm here to share some insider tips that will help you not just survive, but thrive through Galveston's summer heat.
First things first, hydration is key. I know, it seems obvious, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to forget when you're out enjoying the vibrant island life. Carry a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go and if you're enjoying one of our many fine local dining spots, why not ask for a glass of water along with your drink order? It’s a simple way to keep yourself hydrated while indulging in Galveston’s culinary delights.
When the heat is at its peak, it’s the perfect time to explore Galveston’s rich history indoors. We've got so many historic homes and architectural marvels that are not only cool in ambiance but also in temperature. The Bishop's Palace, the Moody Mansion, and the Ashton Villa are just a few that not only transport you back in time but also offer a respite from the scorching heat outside.
Of course, you can always beat the heat by diving into the blue waters of the Gulf. However, sometimes you want to cool off without dealing with the sand. For such moments, Galveston is blessed with multiple public pools and splash pads, perfect for both kids and adults. The Lasker Park Community Swimming Pool and the Schlitterbahn Waterpark are two of my personal favorites.
Another Galveston summer survival tip is to take advantage of our vibrant night life. As the sun sets, the temperature cools down and the Island comes alive in a whole new way. Whether it’s a casual stroll along the Historic Strand District, catching a show at the Grand 1894 Opera House, or enjoying some live music and fresh seafood at one of the many local bars and restaurants, there's no shortage of ways to enjoy Galveston after dark.
Lastly, if you're visiting or new to the island, do as the locals do and take it slow. Galveston runs on island time, and that's especially true in the summer. There's no need to rush - take your time, enjoy the sights, savor the food, and soak in the atmosphere. And remember, a little sweat is just part of the Galveston summer experience, a small price to pay for living and visiting this paradise we call home.
So there you have it, friends, a local's guide on how to survive and enjoy the summer heat in Galveston. Remember, it's all about balance - enjoying the sun and the sea, while also taking care of yourself. With these tips in mind, I'm confident you'll be able to make the most of the vibrant summer season in our beautiful island city. Stay cool, Galveston!
