Walking the Galveston Seawall: what to see and do

By Melanie Nonmacher

Hello, friends! If you've spent any time on our beautiful island, you know that one of the main attractions in Galveston is our historic Seawall. It's more than just a protective barrier against the Gulf of Mexico; it's a local landmark and a destination in itself. Strolling along the Seawall offers you a taste of the island's history, culture, and natural beauty. So, let's take a virtual walk together and explore some of the things you can see and do on the Galveston Seawall.

The Seawall, extending from East Beach to the end of the island, is just over 10 miles long. Starting at the east end, near the port, you will find the Texas Seaport Museum, home to the 1877 tall ship Elissa. This is a must-see for history buffs or anyone fascinated by maritime history. Close by, you can also visit the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum. It's a true testament to Galveston's ties to the oil and gas industry.

As you continue your walk, you will come across the magnificent Hotel Galvez. This century-old hotel, with its Spanish Colonial architecture, is steeped in history and elegance. It's a great place to stop for lunch, or even just a quick coffee, as you soak up the ambiance of this grand dame of the Seawall. Be sure to take a moment to meander through the hotel’s beautiful gardens.

Further along, you'll find Pleasure Pier, an amusement park that juts out into the Gulf. It's impossible to miss the colorful rides and games, and the festive atmosphere is infectious. It's a favorite spot for family fun. If you're feeling adventurous, take a spin on the Iron Shark roller coaster, or try your luck at one of the many games of chance.

Towards the west end of the Seawall, you can't miss the stunning sight of the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. This iconic landmark, with its old-world charm, offers a variety of eateries, shops, and entertainment options. It's a great place to watch the sunset, enjoy an ice cream, or just soak up the seaside atmosphere.

No walk along the Seawall would be complete without a stop at Murdochs. This historic gift shop has been a Galveston staple for over a century. You can browse the wide selection of souvenirs, beach gear, and unique gifts, or just relax on the porch, enjoying the cool sea breeze and the spectacular view of the Gulf.

Walking the Galveston Seawall is a journey through history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a testament to the resilience of our island and its people. Whether you're a long-time local, a new resident, or a visitor, the Seawall has something to offer you. So lace up your walking shoes, grab your sunscreen, and join us for a stroll. See you on the Seawall!
