Things to do in Galveston on a rainy day

By Melanie Nonmacher

Hello, beachy friends! If you're anything like me, you know that Galveston is a paradise regardless of the weather. Yes, even when those Texas-sized raindrops start to fall, there is plenty to explore and experience on our unique and vibrant island. The best part? Many of our local gems come alive in a whole new way when the skies turn grey. So grab your umbrella and let's dive into some of my favorite things to do in Galveston on a rainy day.

The first spot on my list is the Moody Gardens. This tropical haven is home to the Rainforest Pyramid, a 10-story glass structure filled with exotic plants, animals, and birds from around the world. What could be better than strolling through a warm, lush rainforest while the rain pours outside? Plus, there's also the Aquarium Pyramid, Discovery Museum, and MG 3D Theater to keep you entertained. Moody Gardens is a great place to bring the kids, but it's also a perfect escape for adults looking for a little tropical getaway.

If you're a history buff like me, you'll love the Bryan Museum. This gem houses one of the world's largest collections of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork related to Texas and the American West. There's nothing quite like delving into the rich past of our great state while the rain taps gently on the windows. Believe me, you can easily spend a whole rainy day here!

Craving some delicious food? Galveston's culinary scene shines even brighter on rainy days. One of my personal favorite spots is the Mosquito Cafe, a cozy spot known for its homemade comfort food (the chicken pot pie is a must-try). Or, for a more upscale experience, head over to Rudy & Paco's, where you can indulge in some of the best Latin cuisine this side of the Gulf.

If you're looking for something uniquely Galveston, consider a tour of our stunning historic homes. The Bishop's Palace and Moody Mansion are two of the most famous, but there are many more hidden gems scattered throughout the island. And don't worry, most of the tours are indoors, so you'll stay dry while soaking up the fascinating history of these architectural wonders.

Lastly, don't forget the magic of simply enjoying the sound of rain on the roof. Whether you're cozying up in a historic bed and breakfast, listening to the symphony of raindrops from a beachfront condo, or simply savoring a cup of coffee at Mod Coffeehouse, sometimes the best way to enjoy a rainy day in Galveston is to slow down and simply enjoy the moment.

So, the next time rain clouds roll over Galveston, don't despair. Instead, grab your raincoat and venture out. You'll find that our island is just as beautiful, just as full of life, history, and culture, and just as beachy under the rain.
