Things to do in Galveston on a rainy day

By Melanie Nonmacher

Hello Galveston friends and visitors! Today, we're chatting about what to do on those rare, rainy days on our beautiful island. Now, don't get me wrong, I love a good beach day as much as the next Galvestonian, but there's something about a rainy day that gives us the chance to explore our island's many indoor treasures!

When the skies are gray, head over to The Bryan Museum, nestled in the historic Galveston Orphans Home. Housing one of the world's largest collections of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork relating to Texas and the American West, it's an incredible trip through Texas history. Plus, you can't beat the stunning antique details of the historic Orphans Home.

For those with a taste for the bizarre, a visit to the Galveston Island Railroad Museum isn't just about trains. It's an eclectic mix of rail history, unique exhibits and even a haunted rail car that'll give you quite a story to tell. The museum offers a fantastic opportunity to delve into the fascinating history of the railroad, as well as the impact it had on Galveston's growth.

If you're a foodie like me, a rainy day is the perfect excuse to try out some of Galveston's local dining. Gumbo Bar serves up a mean bowl of gumbo that'll warm you right up, and their oyster po'boys are to die for. Over at Mosquito Cafe, you can enjoy some of the best comfort food on the island, while Rudy and Paco's is the place to go for exquisite Central and South American cuisine.

Now, if you're staying in one of our unique local accommodations, such as The Tremont House or Hotel Galvez, a rainy day might just be the perfect time to enjoy their luxurious amenities. From spa treatments to cozy libraries, these historic hotels offer a wealth of indoor activities that will make you forget all about the rain outside.

Lastly, don't forget about our vibrant community happenings! From indoor Mardi Gras events to local art shows, there's almost always something going on in Galveston. Be sure to check out our local calendar for the latest events and happenings around town.

So, next time the rain clouds roll in, don't be dismayed. There's always something to do in Galveston, rain or shine. Explore the rich history, savor the local cuisine, or simply relax in your hotel with a good book. After all, isn't that what island living is all about?
