Beach safety tips every Galveston visitor should know

By Melanie Nonmacher

Hey there, Galveston fanatics and beach-loving visitors! With our year-round warm weather, fantastic local food, and rich history, it's no wonder our lovely island is a favorite destination for many. But let's not forget what draws most people to our shores—our beautiful sandy beaches. Before you grab your sunblock and beach bag, though, I want to share some beach safety tips. After all, part of loving Galveston is making sure we all enjoy it safely and responsibly.

First and foremost, always keep an eye on the Gulf. Our waters can be playful and inviting one minute, then rough and temperamental the next. Make it a habit to check the beach patrol flag system before you dive in. Green means it's safe, yellow requests caution, red warns of high hazard, and purple indicates dangerous marine life. Just remember the saying, "Know before you go".

Speaking of marine life, we share our beaches with a variety of creatures. While it's always a delight to spot dolphins playing in the surf or to find a perfect seashell, some encounters aren't as pleasant. Jellyfish and stingrays can deliver a painful sting. Avoid touching anything that looks unusual and shuffle your feet when entering the water to alert stingrays of your presence.

Now let's talk about the sun, our ever-present companion here in Galveston. Sunburns can ruin your beach day faster than a seagull steals a French fry. So, make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and don't forget to reapply every couple of hours. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses adds extra protection.

Hydration is another key to a successful beach day. With all the fun in the sun, it's easy to forget to drink water. Dehydration can sneak up on you, causing headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. So, always have a water bottle handy. And while we're on the subject of drinking, remember that alcohol and swimming don't mix. Save the celebratory margarita for after your beach day.

Lastly, let's respect our beautiful Galveston beaches by leaving them as we found them. Pick up your trash, fill in any holes you've dug in the sand, and avoid disturbing wildlife. By doing so, we ensure that our beaches remain a place of enjoyment for everyone, locals and visitors alike, for years to come.

So there you have it, folks. A few essential tips to ensure your Galveston beach experience is safe and enjoyable. In Galveston, we take pride in our island's natural beauty and rich history, and we invite you to do the same. Let's continue to enjoy our lovely beaches responsibly and sustainably. Here's to great beach days ahead!
