Beach safety tips every Galveston visitor should know
By Melanie Nonmacher
Ahoy, Galveston friends and visitors! The salty sea air, the warm sand beneath our feet, and the soothing sound of the waves crashing onto the shore - that's what Galveston beach living is all about. But as we soak up the sun and savor the island vibes, we must also remember the importance of beach safety. Today, I’d love to share some essential tips every beach lover should know before hitting the sandy shores of our beloved Galveston.
First things first, let's talk about the power of the sun. It's no secret that Texas heat can be intense, especially during the summer months. When you're basking in the glory of Galveston's sunny beaches, don't forget to apply and reapply sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Also, consider wearing a hat and sunglasses, and seeking shade during peak sun hours (usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.). Remember, a sunburn might just put a damper on your beach fun.
Next up, water safety. Galveston's Gulf waters can sometimes be unpredictable, so it's vital to keep an eye on the beach flag warning system. Green means go, yellow signals caution, and red means stay out of the water. Purple flags are flown when dangerous marine life, like jellyfish, are present. It's always a good idea to swim near a lifeguard and never swim alone. And of course, keep an eye on children at all times.
Now, let’s talk about our local marine life. While Galveston's waters are home to a myriad of fascinating creatures, some can be harmful if disturbed. Jellyfish and stingrays are common residents on our shores, so always shuffle your feet when entering the water to avoid stepping on them. If you're lucky enough to spot a sea turtle or a dolphin, remember, they are protected species, so admire them from a distance.
Finally, let's not forget about mother nature. Texas weather can change in a heartbeat. Keep an eye on the sky and take immediate shelter if you notice signs of an approaching storm. It's also a good idea to have a backup plan in case Mother Nature decides to crash your beach day. After all, Galveston is rich with historical landmarks, delectable dining, and unique shops to explore.
In the grand scheme of things, these safety tips are just a small part of what makes Galveston so special. From Mardi Gras celebrations to our stunning historic homes and architecture, there's so much to love about our island. Stay safe on our beaches, and you'll be able to enjoy all the wonderful experiences Galveston has to offer. Until next time, friends, stay beachy and keep living the island life!
