A local’s guide to surviving summer heat in Galveston

By Melanie Nonmacher

Ahoy, Islanders! As the mercury soars in our beloved Galveston, I thought it would be perfect to share some local wisdom on how to survive this summer heat. Whether you’re a seasoned local, a new resident, or just visiting our island, these tips will help you stay cool and enjoy all the wonderful things Galveston has to offer during the sunny season.

First things first, hydration is key! We're an island after all, and water is our best friend. Make sure you always have a bottle of water on hand, especially if you're out and about exploring our historic homes or soaking up the beach life. Don't wait until you're thirsty to take a sip - by then, you're already dehydrated. And remember, ice-cold drinks from ShyKatz Deli or The Proletariat Gallery & Public House can also do the trick!

Speaking of our beautiful beaches, they're a double-edged sword during the summer. Yes, they're the perfect place to relax and unwind, but they can also be a scorching hotbed of sunburn and heatstroke. Slather on that sunscreen - at least SPF 30 - and don't forget to reapply every two hours. Bring along a beach umbrella or canopy, and take frequent breaks from the sun to cool down. The Stewart Beach Pavilion and East Beach's boardwalk provide great shaded areas where you can enjoy the sea breeze without the sun's harsh rays.

When the heat gets too much, Galveston has plenty of indoor attractions where you can enjoy a respite from the sun. The Bryan Museum, Bishop's Palace, and the 1894 Grand Opera House offer fascinating glimpses into our island's rich history, all in the comfort of air-conditioned interiors. Or, take a stroll through The Strand Historic District where you can duck into unique boutiques and art galleries when you need to cool off.

If you're feeling peckish, why not grab a bite at one of Galveston's many eateries? Enjoy some Gulf Coast seafood at Fisherman's Wharf, indulge in a frozen treat at La King's Confectionery, or cool down with a craft beer at Galveston Island Brewing. And, don't forget, many of our dining spots offer outdoor seating under misting fans, so you can enjoy the island vibes without overheating.

Lastly, remember that summer in Galveston isn't just about surviving the heat, it's about embracing our island culture and community. Check out seasonal events like Bands on the Sand or Movie Nite on The Strand. Both offer great opportunities to enjoy the balmy summer nights with fellow Islanders. And remember, we're all in this together, so let's look out for each other and stay cool, Galveston!
