Family friendly activities in Galveston year round

By Melanie Nonmacher

Howdy, y'all! As a Galvestonian who's spent many a sunny day exploring our island paradise, I'm here to share some of my favorite family-friendly activities that you can enjoy all year round in this slice of Texas heaven. Galveston, with its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant local culture, offers an impressive array of experiences that will keep every member of the family entertained, no matter the season. So, let's dive right into it!

First off, let's talk about our beaches. They are, after all, the star of the show! Galveston's beaches are perfect for family picnics, sandcastle building, and even a friendly game of beach volleyball. Stewart Beach is a local favorite, with lifeguards, restrooms, showers, concession stands, and a park for the kids. And don't miss the chance to catch a breathtaking sunrise or sunset over the Gulf - it's a sight that'll have you coming back for more.

If you're a history buff or have little ones curious about Galveston's past, why not take a tour of our historic homes? The 1892 Bishop's Palace, with its ornate interior and impressive exterior, is a must-visit. The Moody Mansion, another architectural gem, is a 28,000 square-foot, four-story structure that's been restored to its original splendor. Both of these homes offer guided tours that provide a fascinating glimpse into Galveston's past.

For the nature lovers in your family, the Galveston Island State Park is a must-visit. This coastal haven offers a variety of recreational activities including fishing, bird watching, hiking, biking, and even camping. You can paddle through the park's bay side marshes or take a stroll along the beach side trails. It's a perfect place to disconnect and appreciate the diverse ecosystems of our beautiful island.

When it's time to refuel, Galveston's local dining scene won't disappoint. From fresh seafood at the famous Gaido's Seafood Restaurant to a casual family meal at The Spot, you'll find something to satisfy every palate. And don't forget to treat your sweet tooth at La King's Confectionery on The Strand, where you can watch taffy being made on equipment dating back to the 1920s!

And lastly, no matter the time of year, Galveston always has an event to look forward to. From the fun-filled Mardi Gras celebrations to the annual Dickens on The Strand holiday street festival, our community knows how to throw a party. These events offer an amazing opportunity to immerse yourself in the island's unique culture and traditions.

So, whether you're a local or a visitor, a first-timer or a seasoned Galveston veteran, I hope you find joy in these activities that make our island so special. Here's to creating cherished memories with your loved ones in Galveston, the island that we all love and call home.
