Walking the Galveston Seawall: what to see and do
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello, fellow beach lovers and Galveston enthusiasts! Today we're going to take a virtual stroll along one of my absolute favorite spots on the island—the Galveston Seawall. Stretching over 10 miles long, this impressive structure has been a bulwark against the Gulf's fiercest storms since 1904, but it's also a fantastic promenade teeming with captivating sights, delicious food, and unique experiences. There is so much to see and do along the Seawall—it's high time we delved into the best it has to offer!
For those who might not know, the Seawall is more than just a protective barrier—it's an integral part of our community's history. Start your walk at the Seawall's east end near Stewart Beach, where you'll find the Texas Heroes Monument. Erected in 1900, it's a solemn tribute to the defenders of the Texas Revolution. As you continue your journey, keep an eye out for the historical markers that dot the Seawall, each telling a different chapter of our island's rich and vibrant past.
Now, let's talk about the views. The Seawall offers some of the best seaside panoramas in Galveston. The expanse of the open gulf, the endless horizon, the ships in the distance, and the playful dolphins—if you're lucky enough to spot them—all make for an unforgettable backdrop. Don't forget your camera or, better yet, your sketch pad if you're artistically inclined. The stunning vistas are sure to inspire.
A walk along the Seawall wouldn't be complete without indulging in some local cuisine. There are numerous restaurants and cafes to choose from, each offering mouth-watering dishes that capture the spirit of the Gulf. From fresh seafood to homemade ice cream, there's something to satisfy every palate. And let's not forget about the local bars! Enjoy a refreshing cocktail while overlooking the water—it's the perfect way to unwind after your walk.
The Seawall is also a hub of entertainment and adventure. Pleasure Pier is a must-visit, with its nostalgic amusement park rides, games, and shops. If you're up for some water-based fun, rent a kayak or paddleboard from one of the many vendors along the Seawall. Or, if you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, why not rent a bike or a surrey to explore the Seawall in a different way?
At the end of the day, the Galveston Seawall is more than just a tourist destination. It's a place where our community comes together, where our history is etched into every marker, and where the spirit of island life shines through. Whether you're a local or a visitor, walking the Seawall is a quintessential Galveston experience that you shouldn't miss. So, grab your sunscreen, your favorite hat, and let's hit the Seawall!
