Walking the Galveston Seawall: what to see and do

Hello, fellow lovers of Galveston! Today we're talking about one of our island's most beloved features: the Galveston Seawall. Stretching for over 10 miles along the Gulf of Mexico, this charming promenade offers a prime opportunity to soak in some of our community's best sights and experiences. Whether you're an active jogger, a casual stroller, or a dedicated bird watcher, the Seawall is a destination you can't afford to miss.

If you start your walk at the eastern end of the Seawall, you'll find yourself at the historic Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. This vibrant amusement park juts out into the ocean, offering thrill rides, games, and food stands reminiscent of a classic coastal carnival. It's a great spot to grab a cotton candy and take a leisurely stroll back in time.

Continue your walk westward, and you'll pass by some of our favorite local eateries. Gaido's Seafood Restaurant, an island staple since 1911, offers mouthwatering seafood and stunning beachfront views. And for those with a sweet tooth, be sure to stop by La King's Confectionery. This 1920s-style soda fountain and candy store serves up handmade saltwater taffy, ice cream, and more.

As you venture further, you'll discover the 61st Street Fishing Pier, a popular spot for locals and visitors to cast a line. Whether you're an experienced angler or just trying it out for the first time, this is a perfect place to relax and potentially reel in your dinner. If you're lucky, you might even spot a playful pod of dolphins in the distance!

The Seawall is also home to numerous historic monuments and markers that recount Galveston's rich and occasionally tumultuous past. The most notable is the 1900 Storm Memorial, a poignant tribute to the survivors of the devastating hurricane that reshaped our island over a century ago.
