A guide to Galveston's Mardi Gras traditions

By Melanie Nonmacher

Howdy Galvestonians and welcome to all our beloved visitors! One of the most anticipated events of the year is fast approaching - Galveston’s very own Mardi Gras Celebration. With a history that dates back to 1867, Mardi Gras in Galveston is not just a party, it’s a beloved tradition that brings together our community, and invites visitors from all around to partake in our unique island culture. From the extravagant parades to our delectable local cuisine, it’s a time when the island truly comes to life.

Our Mardi Gras celebration is second only to New Orleans, both in size and extravagance. The heart of the action takes place in The Strand Historic District, where beautifully restored 19th-century buildings serve as a picturesque backdrop to a two-week party. Dozens of parades wind their way through the district, each one unique in its own way. Some feature high school marching bands, others highlight our local businesses, and of course, there's the ever-popular Krewe parades with their elaborate floats and costumed riders.

Speaking of Krewes, these social clubs are the driving force behind Mardi Gras in Galveston. Each Krewe hosts their own balls, parades and parties throughout the celebration. They're known for their camaraderie, community service and, during Mardi Gras, their spectacular themed costumes. From the Knights of Momus, Galveston's oldest Krewe, to newer additions like the Krewe of Barkus and Meoux for pet lovers, there's a Krewe for everyone here.

No Mardi Gras celebration would be complete without the food. And let me tell you, Galveston knows how to serve up some seriously delicious Mardi Gras fare. King Cake, a sweet cinnamon-filled treat, is a traditional favorite. But there’s also a variety of local seafood, gumbo, and Cajun specialties to indulge in. Pair it with a refreshing Hurricanes, a traditional Mardi Gras cocktail, and you'll be feeling the spirit of the celebration in no time.

For those who prefer a quieter celebration, Galveston's Mardi Gras offers plenty of family-friendly events as well. The Children's Parade, organized by Firefighters Local 571, is a delightful event featuring decorated floats, kids in costumes, and plenty of beads. The Family Gras, held in the beautiful Saengerfest Park, offers games, live entertainment and a chance to relax and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Mardi Gras in Galveston is a tradition that truly encapsulates the spirit of our island - it's a mix of history, culture, fun, and of course, a love for our community. Whether you're a local who's been attending since you were a child, or a visitor experiencing it for the first time, Mardi Gras in Galveston is sure to create memories that will last a lifetime. Laissez les bon temps rouler, y'all!
