The story behind Galveston's famous sea wall

Oh, the Galveston seawall. It's as much a part of our island's identity as our historic homes, vibrant Mardi Gras celebrations, and our love for a good seafood meal. It's a symbol of resilience, a protector of our island charm, and a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike to stroll, bike, or simply watch the waves roll in. But have you ever wondered about the story of how our famous seawall came to be? Our story begins in the late 19th century, when Galveston was the largest city in Texas and a thriving commercial hub. But on September 8, 1900, a catastrophic hurricane, now known as the Great Storm, swept through our island. With winds up to 140 mph and a storm surge that engulfed the city, it remains the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history, taking the lives of an estimated 6,000 to 8,000 people.

Following the devastation, our island's leaders faced a decision: abandon Galveston or find a way to protect it from future storms. They chose the latter, determined not to let our island's bustling commerce and vibrant community fade into history. Thus, the concept of the Galveston seawall was born. It was to be a Herculean task, a 17-foot high, 10-mile long bulwark against the Gulf of Mexico's fury.

Work commenced in 1902, with engineers using granite blocks from nearby quarries, poured concrete, and a lot of grit to build a structure capable of withstanding the might of the sea. But the seawall was only part of the plan. To further safeguard the city, they also embarked on an ambitious project to raise the city's elevation. Buildings, streets, even entire neighborhoods, were lifted up to 17 feet on jackscrews, with sand dredged from the harbor used to fill the space underneath.

Completed in 1963, the seawall has since proved its worth, protecting our beloved island from many a storm. And while it's now a backdrop for our beachfront festivities and a canvas for the vibrant murals of the Galveston Seawall Interpretive Trail, let's not forget its original purpose.
