A local’s guide to surviving summer heat in Galveston

By Melanie Nonmacher

Ah, summer in Galveston. Is there anything quite like it? The sun is beaming, the waves are crashing, and the island is alive with activity. Still, as much as we love our Galveston summers, we'd be remiss not to mention the heat. But don't sweat it! As locals, we've got a few tricks up our lightweight, breathable sleeves to keep cool, and we're here to share them with you.

First things first, we cannot stress the importance of staying hydrated. And no, margaritas on the beach don't count! We're talking about good old-fashioned H2O. With temperatures often soaring into the 90s, it's essential to keep a bottle of water with you. And hey, if you want to add a splash of local flavor, try infusing your water with freshly cut Galveston Island citrus!

Speaking of local flavor, let's talk about our food scene. Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of our outdoor dining options. Many local restaurants offer shaded patios where you can enjoy the sea breeze while indulging in fresh seafood. A fan favorite is the Shrimp 'N Stuff downtown, famous for their po'boys and crab balls, perfect for a summer meal!

But what about those days when the mercury is really climbing? Well, that's when we hit the beach. Not only does the water offer a refreshing respite, but the sands of Galveston are also home to an array of activities. From building sandcastles to surfing, there's no shortage of ways to stay active while staying cool. And remember, the sand can get hot, so don't forget your flip flops!

Of course, we must mention the beauty of our historic homes and architecture. When the midday sun becomes too strong, why not take a tour? The Bishop's Palace and the Moody Mansion offer guided tours, allowing you to soak up some history while enjoying the cool interiors of these stunning properties.

Finally, remember to embrace the laid-back island culture. Siestas aren't just for Spain! Take a cue from the locals and use the hottest part of the day to relax, recharge, and enjoy some downtime. Whether you choose to kick back with a good book on a shady porch, or retreat inside to enjoy some local art or music, there's no wrong way to chill out in Galveston.

So there you have it, a local's guide to surviving summer heat in Galveston. Yes, it can get hot, but with a little planning and a lot of water, it's more than manageable. After all, there's a reason we choose to call this beautiful, vibrant, sun-soaked island home. Stay cool, Galveston!
