Beach safety tips every Galveston visitor should know

By Melanie Nonmacher

Howdy, folks! As we all know, our beloved Galveston Island is a paradise for beach enthusiasts, but that doesn't mean we can forget about safety while enjoying the sun, sea, and sand. After all, the beach is as unpredictable as it is beautiful. From the warm Gulf waters to the historic Strand, we're here to keep everybody safe with a few tips every Galveston visitor should know. So grab your sun hat and let's dive right in, shall we?

First and foremost, it's important to remember that our Texas sun isn't just about giving us that perfect summer tan. It's a powerful force that can easily lead to sunburn if we're not careful. Always apply a generous amount of sunblock, preferably one that's water-resistant and has an SPF of 30 or higher. Don't forget to reapply every two hours or after swimming. And while we're talking about protection, don't forget your sunglasses to protect those peepers and a hat to guard your head and neck.

Next up, let's talk about the beautiful Gulf waters. It's vital to remember that rip currents can occur, so keep an eye out for any changes in water color, movement, or any odd gaps in the waves. If you're caught in a rip current, don't panic. Swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the current, then swim back to the beach. And always remember the beach flag warning system: green means go, yellow means caution, and red means stay out of the water.

Now, we all love a good beach picnic, but let's make sure we're not inviting any unwanted guests. Seagulls and other creatures are part of our island's charm, but they can become a nuisance if they associate humans with food. Pack your snacks and meals in sealed containers and clean up any leftovers promptly. Let's keep Galveston beautiful and its wildlife wild.

And finally, let's remember there's more to our island than the beach. Galveston is rich with history and culture, from the Strand's Victorian-era buildings to the colorful events of Mardi Gras. Be sure to explore our local dining scene, where you can taste the freshest seafood and authentic Tex-Mex. Whether you're staying in a charming B&B or a historic home, there's always something new to discover.

Enjoying the beach is a big part of Galveston life, but safety should always come first. Keep these tips in mind, and you're sure to have a visit filled with fun, sun, and memories to last a lifetime. Whether you're a local or a visitor, let's all do our part to keep Galveston the gem of the Gulf.
