Walking the Galveston Seawall: what to see and do
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello beach lovers! Today, we're going on a journey along one of Galveston's most iconic features: the Seawall. Stretching over 10 miles, the Galveston Seawall is more than just a bulwark against the Gulf of Mexico's powerful surge; it's a hub of entertainment, history, and beauty that makes our island so special. So, slip into those flip-flops and let's take a stroll.
Our first stop is the 61st Street Fishing Pier. Here, you'll see a lively mix of locals and tourists casting lines and hoping for a big catch. There's something so soothing about the rhythmic casting and reeling, the cool sea breeze, and the sound of seagulls. And even if fishing isn't your thing, the sight of the sun setting over the glistening gulf is worth the stop. Trust me on this one.
Next, we hit the heart of the Seawall, where the historic Hotel Galvez stands proudly. This century-old hotel is a testament to Galveston's resilience and charm. Stop by for a guided tour to learn about its fascinating history or simply admire its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. And while you're there, grab a bite at the Galvez Bar & Grill. Their Sunday Brunch is a local favorite.
Moving along, we come to Pleasure Pier. This amusement park juts out over the Gulf, offering thrilling rides, games, and unique shopping outlets. It's a great place for families, but also makes for a fun date night. Be sure to try the Texas Star Flyer for a breathtaking view of the island. But beware if you're afraid of heights; this ride is not for the faint of heart!
As we continue our walk, we'll pass by numerous eateries, souvenir shops, and murals. Take a moment to appreciate the "Greetings from Galveston" mural, a perfect backdrop for your Seawall selfies. And don't forget to stop for a scoop (or two) of ice cream at the vintage LaKing's Confectionery. It's an island tradition!
Our Seawall stroll ends at the East End Historic District, a treasure trove of Victorian-era homes and buildings. These architectural gems, with their intricate woodwork and colorful facades, are a captivating sight. If you're into history, take a guided tour to learn about Galveston's rich past or simply wander around and soak in the charm of our beloved island.
Walking the Galveston Seawall is more than just a leisurely stroll; it's a journey through the heart of our island, a testament to our resilience, and a celebration of our vibrant culture. So, what are you waiting for? Come and experience the magic of the Seawall. See you on the beach!
