Annual events in Galveston you should not miss

By Melanie Nonmacher

Hello there, fellow Galvestonians and welcome visitors! Our island home is known for its rich history, picturesque historic homes, and vibrant island culture, but did you know that Galveston is also host to an array of annual events that are not to be missed? From traditional Mardi Gras celebrations to unique local happenings, let's uncover some of the annual events that help to make Galveston such a special place to live and visit.

First up on our calendar is the Galveston Island Mardi Gras, which typically kicks off in February. This is truly a spectacle to behold and is considered the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States. Expect colorful parades, extravagant floats, masked balls, and tons of bead tossing. This event is a true testament to the spirit of Galveston, full of fun, laughter, and community.

Moving into spring, we have another fantastic event - the Galveston Island Historic Homes Tour. Usually held in May, this tour offers a unique opportunity to explore some of the most charming and historically significant homes in Galveston. This event provides a glimpse into the island's rich architectural past and it's an absolute must for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts.

Summertime shines with the annual AIA Sandcastle Competition at East Beach. This event in June brings together teams of architects, designers, and engineers to create mind-blowing sandcastles that are far from your typical beach day creations. From intricate designs to towering structures, this event is definitely a testament to Galveston's creative spirit.

As the summer heat subsides and the cool breezes of fall set in, Galveston continues to impress with the annual Galveston Island Shrimp Festival in September. This event is a seafood lover's dream come true, featuring a gumbo cook-off, a shrimp scavenger hunt, and of course, plenty of delicious shrimp dishes to sample. The atmosphere is always electric, filled with the aroma of spicy gumbo and the sound of live music.

Finally, as we wrap up the year, the Galveston Dickens on The Strand festival in December takes us on a journey back in time to the Victorian Era. Expect to see characters from Charles Dickens' novels, Victorian-inspired architecture, and plenty of entertainment. This event offers a unique way to ring in the holiday season and it's something that both locals and visitors look forward to every year.

So there you have it, a sneak peek into some of the annual events that make Galveston such a unique and vibrant place to be. While these are just a handful of the events we host throughout the year, they truly reflect the sense of community, history, and culture that we are proud to call our own. Whether you're a local or a visitor, I hope to see you at one of these events soon!
