A guide to Galveston's Mardi Gras traditions
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello there, fellow Galvestonians and welcome visitors! As we approach the vibrant and festive season of Mardi Gras, it's the perfect time to delve into the rich and colorful traditions this island town holds dear. Our beloved Galveston, with its unique blend of southern charm, beach vibes, and lively cultural heritage, celebrates Mardi Gras like no other place. For those not in the know, Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is a carnival celebration that begins on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany and culminates on the day before Ash Wednesday.
Mardi Gras in Galveston is a testament to our community's resilience and knack for throwing a great party. The tradition dates back to 1867, with elaborate parades, masked balls, and public celebrations. While the festivities waned during the mid-20th century, they were revived with gusto in 1985 and have been a highlight on Galveston's annual calendar ever since. We have over 30 parades, both large-scale downtown events and neighborhood processions, each characterized by vibrant floats, costumed revelers, and plenty of bead-throwing.
In Galveston, we also have a unique tradition called the Knights of Momus Grand Night Parade, named after Momus, the Greek god of mockery and satire. This is the largest parade of Mardi Gras Galveston, where beautifully illuminated floats proceed down the Seawall Boulevard, creating an unforgettable spectacle under the night sky. It's a sight to behold and a favorite among both locals and tourists.
Mardi Gras is not just about parades and parties. It's also about enjoying some of Galveston’s culinary delights. King Cake, a sweet and colorful cake that is a Mardi Gras staple, is found in bakeries all over town during the season. And don't forget the crawfish boils, where friends and families gather to enjoy this southern delicacy. Galveston's local dining scene truly comes alive during Mardi Gras, with special menus and themed dishes offered by many of our cherished restaurants.
Of course, Mardi Gras in Galveston also means embracing the spirit of giving and community. Many of the Mardi Gras Krewes (organized groups that put on a parade or ball for the Carnival season) undertake charitable activities and community service projects. It is a time when we come together as a community, contribute to the well-being of our fellow islanders, and showcase the best of what Galveston has to offer.
As we look forward to this year's Mardi Gras celebrations, whether you're a long-time local, a new resident, or a visitor to our shores, I encourage you to immerse yourself in the traditions, the tastes, and the communal spirit of this wonderful event. Enjoy the parades, savor the food, join in the fun, and most importantly, experience the warmth and hospitality of Galveston Island. Let's make Mardi Gras 2022 a celebration to remember!
