Annual events in Galveston you should not miss

By Melanie Nonmacher

Hello there, Galveston beach lovers! Our island paradise is not just about the sun, sand, and the sea – it's also about the vibrant community we have here, and the year-round events that make Galveston a place like no other. As someone who has been living in this beautiful island city for years, I can't emphasize enough how much these events add to the charm of Galveston. So, whether you're a local, a regular visitor, or planning your first trip, here are some annual events you absolutely should not miss.

First on the list is the Galveston Island Mardi Gras, usually held in February. It's Texas's largest Mardi Gras celebration, and let me tell you, we Galvestonians know how to throw a party! The island comes alive with parades, balcony parties, concerts, and balls. The streets fill with people wearing colorful costumes, shiny beads, and the biggest smiles. Plus, the food and drinks are top-notch. If you haven't experienced Mardi Gras in Galveston yet, you're definitely missing out!

Next is the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier's anniversary celebration in May. This iconic landmark, jutting out over the Gulf of Mexico, is home to thrilling rides, games, shops, and restaurants. During its anniversary, there are extra festive activities planned, making it even more enjoyable for families, couples, and everyone in between. And the view of the sunset from the Pleasure Pier? Absolutely unbeatable!

When summer rolls around, we've got the Annual Beach Revue in June. This vintage-inspired event pays homage to Galveston's past as a popular seaside resort destination in the early 20th century. Think bathing beauty contests, live music, vintage vendors, and classic cars – it's a unique step back in time. Plus, the Beach Revue is the perfect excuse to enjoy a day (or two!) at the beach.

As we transition to fall, the Galveston Island Shrimp Festival in September is a must-attend. As a coastal city, Galveston has a rich seafood culture and this festival celebrates our love for shrimp. Featuring a shrimp gumbo cook-off, a 5k run, and a boat show, it's a delicious and fun-filled event that truly embodies the spirit of Galveston.

Finally, we round off the year with Dickens on the Strand in December. This holiday street festival transports you back to the Victorian era, all in celebration of Galveston's rich historical heritage. The streets of downtown Galveston are filled with carolers, food vendors, and people dressed in Victorian attire. It's a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit and appreciate the charm and history of our beautiful island city.

Don't you just love how these events showcase the different aspects of life in Galveston? From our rich history and culture to our love for food and the beach, these annual events truly capture the essence of Galveston. So, make sure to mark your calendars and join in the fun. See you there!
